Activities and Attractions On-Campus

Things to Do on the University of Costa Rica CampusThe University of Costa Rica (UCR), the country’s largest and oldest higher education institution, offers much more than academic pursuits. Its main campus in San Pedro de Montes de Oca is a vibrant cultural, recreational, and educational hub. Visitors can explore a variety of attractions, from museums and theaters to lush green spaces and specialized research facilities. Here’s a guide to the must-visit spots on campus:

Butterfly House
Nestled within the Leonelo Oviedo Forest, the Butterfly House at UCR is a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts. Established in 2010, this sanctuary educates visitors about butterfly conservation while serving as a research and training site for biology, agronomy, and zootechnics students. Home to 150 butterflies spanning at least 20 species, the Butterfly House showcases the fascinating life cycle of butterflies and emphasizes their ecological importance. Open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, it is a serene and educational stop for all ages.

University Cinema
For film lovers, the University Cinema offers a treasure trove of cinematic experiences. Located in the Alberto Brenes Córdoba auditorium of the Faculty of Law, this free space features an eclectic mix of national and international films. Highlights include film forums, roundtables, and the Open Air Cinema season in the dry months of January through March, held at Plaza 24 de Abril. It’s a place to engage with the art of cinema and explore unique, high-quality productions.

University Theatre
Founded in 1950, the University Theatre is a beacon of theatrical creativity and experimentation. Situated across from the Saprissa Building, this 300-seat venue hosts productions featuring local and international talents. The theater nurtures Costa Rica’s theater movement through workshops, radio programs, and collaborations with visiting directors and actors. Performances here provide an immersive cultural experience for theater enthusiasts.

Montes de Oca Theatre
The Montes de Oca Theatre, located in the Saprissa Building near the Carlos Monge Alfaro Library, is the headquarters of the university’s Dance Company and Open Dance Program. This venue showcases contemporary dance, theater, and music by both institutional and independent groups, promoting creativity and experimentation. It’s a vibrant space to witness Costa Rica’s dynamic performing arts scene.

Planetarium
A trip to the UCR Planetarium is a celestial adventure. This domed cinema features immersive films and telescopic nights that bring the wonders of the universe to life. Programs like “The Celestial Zoo” and “Zodiacal Constellations” blend science with mythology, making it an engaging experience for audiences of all ages. Located in the Research City, the Planetarium is a stellar attraction for stargazers.

Museum+UCR
The Museum of the University of Costa Rica is a gateway to the country’s cultural and natural heritage. With over 70 collections ranging from insects and rocks to art and historical artifacts, the museum curates both permanent and temporary exhibits. A notable feature is the Geogira exhibition, offering a fascinating journey through geological history. Located in Sabanilla, it’s a must-visit for history and science buffs.

Insect Museum
Housed in the basement of the School of Musical Arts, the Insect Museum showcases Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity with nearly one million specimens. Visitors can explore the ecological importance of insects through interactive exhibits and a virtual gallery. Ideal for school groups and curious individuals, it’s an educational deep dive into the world of entomology.

Concerts
Music enthusiasts will appreciate UCR’s diverse concert offerings. Performances by soloists, choirs, symphonies, and chamber groups take place in Room 107 of the School of Musical Arts and outdoor venues during events like Welcome Week. The Cultural Mondays program also features a variety of artistic expressions, ensuring there’s something for every musical taste.

Exhibitions
Art lovers can explore rotating exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and more across the campus. Managed by the Cultural Extension Department, these displays highlight the works of university-affiliated and community artists. Interactive workshops and curatorial consultations add depth to this artistic experience.

Sports Facilities
For those seeking active pursuits, UCR’s sports complex features facilities for swimming, tennis, basketball, and athletics, including the renowned Ecological Stadium. The lush surroundings and shaded seating make it a favorite spot for both athletes and spectators. An internal bus service ensures easy access to these facilities.

University Gymnasium
Located in the Saprissa Building, the University Gymnasium offers fitness programs like weight training, aerobics, and cycling. Open to students, staff, and the public, it’s a great place to stay active during your visit.
