Dr. Ingo Wehrtmann participated in January 2024 as invited speaker in a bimodal panel discussion organized by The Diplomatic Academy of Foreign Service Manuel María de Peralta, San José, Costa Rica, in order to present a summary of the FCB-project as well as on overview of the case study in the Golfo de Nicoya, Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Numerous representatives of the diplomatic corps in Costa Rica attended this activity in person plus almost 120 people connected via Internet. “The Diplomatic Academy of Foreign Service Manuel María de Peralta hosted a discussion to analyze the status of the commitments made at COP 21, and to make a balance of COP 28 and of ongoing efforts.
The COP is the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Speakers Ana Patricia Villalobos, chief negotiator for Costa Rica at the COP, Dr. Schuldt, Minister Counselor of Ecuador in Geneva, Byron Javier Moreno, specialist in adaptation to Climate Change at the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador, René Castro, expert and former Assistant Director General for Climate Strategy and Policy, Biodiversity and Environment at FAO, Marisol Yglesias, expert in Environmental Health at the University of Costa Rica, and Dr. Ingo Wehrtmann, former Director of CIMAR/UCR, reviewed the issues addressed and negotiation processes at each COP, which include sectors such as agriculture, transportation, energy, forestry and waste, among others; commitments regarding the gradual reduction of fossil fuel use, sustainable technologies, reduction of global warming and climate finance.
For her part, the director of the Diplomatic Academy, Ambassador Carmen Claramunt, highlighted the participation of scientists in these processes, because they help to make visible the solutions to the challenges of the countries participating in the Climate Change Conferences.
At COP 28, held in December 2023 in Dubai, Costa Rica presented an agenda focused on sustainable energy, ocean protection, the search for public transportation solutions, sustainable use of forests and timber, decarbonization linked to payment for environmental services, agro-landscapes, blue agenda and climate finance.”
