This prestigious annual list acknowledges researchers whose work ranks in the top 1% by citations in their respective fields over the past 11 years, signifying their significant global influence.
Dr. Sumaila, a Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in fisheries economics, ocean conservation policy, and marine ecosystem valuation. His research, which bridges natural science, economics, and policy, has garnered over 66,000 citations and an h-index of 93. Dr. Cheung, Director of UBC’s Changing Ocean Research Unit, focuses his research on the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and fisheries and has amassed over 66,000 citations with an h-index of 80.
Both Dr. Cheung and Dr. Sumaila have been consistently featured as highly cited researchers, with both receiving the award annually since 2021. Their continued presence on this list underscores the sustained impact and importance of their scholarly contributions.
The 2025 list highlights 6,868 researchers from more than 1,300 institutions across 60 countries, illustrating the global concentration of top-tier research talent. Canada is home to 227 of these distinguished researchers, emphasizing the national significance of the contributions made by academics like Drs. Sumaila and Cheung.
